Maestro's last performance was Jan. 17, when The Brooklyn Bridge was among groups appearing at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. It was billed as "Bowzer's Ultimate Doo-Wop Party."

"As frail and weak as Johnny seemed, I knew he didn't want to have to cancel," host Jon "Bowzer" Bauman said in an e-mailed statement. "I told him afterward it was the most courageous performance I'd ever seen. As frail as he looked, that's how strong he sounded.

"It was a privilege to have known him, and it was thrilling to have listened to him," said Bauman.

Lehighton Residents brought home five First Place awards in their show classes recently at the 2009 Oldsmobile Nationals. The event was held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion, Pa. July 15-19. Despite cool temperatures and occasional rain showers the show hosted over 500 judged Oldsmobiles and many more participants and enthusiasts from across the country for this annual event. Pictured left to right are Joe and Rose Barachie with their 1974 Olds Cutlass Hurst Olds, which also earned a Best Of Class Award, Mike Kulp with his 78 Olds Salon 442, Joe and Debbie Curran with their 1978 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham with T-tops, David Curran and nephew Joe Curran III with his custom 2000 Olds Alero, and Rob Kulp with Mike's 1997 Olds Cutlass Supreme. The awards were presented at a banquet following the conclusion of the show on Saturday night. Joe and David Curran, and Joe Barachie are members of the local car club Jukebox Cruisers.
