Downtown Becomes
Showcase For Car Buffs
Hazleton Standard-Speaker
By SAM GALSKI (Staff Writer)
Published: August 8, 2009
A parade of more than 300 vehicles participated in the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce's eighth annual cruise to East Broad Street, which was converted Friday into a four-block showcase for a fleet of vintage and modern cars and trucks.
A 1963 Volkswagen dune buggy owned by (JBCCC Members) Frank and Patty Mertz, Jim Thorpe...
...participating in Friday's cruise was the first for the Mertz family in Hazleton.
"There's beautiful cars, nice people and it's well-organized - that's the big thing," Frank Mertz said.
Mertz said he worked for three years on restoring the VW Bug. He got the vehicle from his brother, who accepted it as payment a few years ago for work he did for an acquaintance.
When Mertz got hold of the vehicle, it was barely functional.
"The tires were flat and the floors rotted," he said while leafing through a small photo album that documented each phase of the refurbishment. "I had to cut all the floors out and weld the new ones in."
Mertz had a 1600cc Volkswagen motor installed as part of the rebuild, and now frequently enters the vehicle in car shows.
"We like to cruise on the weekends with it," Mertz said with a smile. "This weekend, we'll be at the car show in Pottsville."
He said he heard about Hazleton's car cruise through friends in Nesquehoning.
